In this course, you are learning about the role language plays in our daily lives, and the way in which language shapes and reflects our social and cultural lives. The textbook author, Dr. Laura Ahearn, chose the title of Living Language for the textbook because she wanted to communicate that language is an essential part of daily life, of living.
As you learn more about this subject, I am sure you are thinking about ways in which language plays a role in your own life, and the life of people all around you. Language also reflects something about the social relationships you have, and the cultural values that matter to you. In this era we are living in, language’ central role in shaping and reflecting society has become very visible as well.
The Final Essay will give you an opportunity to reflect on and explore these matters from your own perspective, and draw on your own lived experiences.
Essay Topic
1. The history of language(s), dialects, styles of speech, etc. that you know (e.g., going back in time, and in relation to social and cultural circumstances)
Formatting Checklist
o Essay is approximately 4-5 pages in length not including Title Page
o Essay Format: double-spaced text, 12-point font, and 1-inch margins, with any conventional font (Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, etc.)
o Title page: should precede your first page of text and should list your paper’s descriptive title (name it something creative and descriptive of your topic, not merely "Anth 310 Final Essay") followed by your name, Anth 310, date of submission, Winter Session 2021-2022, and CSUN.
o Sources and Citations: there is no minimum number of sources required, but if you do use sources, please use whatever style you are accustomed to consistently. Check with me if you have questions.
