In Achebe’s Anthills of the Savannah, the Kanganese leadership disregards the population’s wish to achieve a level of prosperity and peace. The population feels economically insecure and lacks basic human rights protections. But, the novel doesn’t just highlight conflicts, but also suggests measures to improve society in the future.

Women take on a particularly significant role in this regard. What is that role for women in Kangan, and why does Achebe suggest it for his imaginary society? Select specific examples from the second half of the novel to discuss how Achebe foreshadows a more peaceful and just Kangan with the help of specific women, their behavior, and their actions and socio-political views.
