Instructions: For the following writing assignment, please select one of the following two questions. I will evaluate your essay based on the following criteria. First, have you clearly articulated an argument? Second, do you adequately engage the readings? I encourage you to make references to passages in assigned readings, but do not write a paper that consists of a string of quotations. No bibliography is necessary, but I do expect you to cite sources in the text. For example, if you excerpt a quotation from Jacobs on page 155. Please write (Jacobs 1961: 155) next to the quotation. Third, do you have strong evidence to back up your conclusions? Fourth, is your paper well-organized? Fifth, does your paper demonstrate a clear grasp of the subject matter? Please do not feel as though you need to argue one way or another to receive a good grade. There is no definitive right answer to the question, but there are wrong answers. Sixth, stating a principle, concept, or fact is not the same as providing an explanation for that principle, concept, or fact. Be sure to adequately define and explain the positions that you take in your analysis. Seventh, in your conclusion be sure to remind me of your original argument. I have one last reminder. I promise that this is the last reminder. When you paraphrase an idea that you have taken from a course reading, be sure to reformulate the idea in your own words. There should be “NO” trace of the original sentence in the revised sentence or passage.

** Plagiarism is a serious infraction. Proven plagiarized work will be treated as not submitted, resulting in an F for the course.

Questions

Though none of the books we have read are purely prescriptive, they all have clear policy relevance. For this question, please write a comparative essay that examines the policy implications that flow from the arguments advanced by each of the urban social scientists we have studied this semester. Which of these is the most persuasive? Be sure to limit your essay to three authors and note that Desmond should be one of the three authors on your list. It is important that you essay pay careful attention to the arguments and analyses that inform these policy interventions. In other words, to come up with the best solution, you must be able to diagnose the problem effectively.

Either implicitly or explicitly, each of the books we have read this semester identifies a challenge or series of challenges that our cities face. Jane Jacobs contends that Modernist urban planning has damaged the vitality of our greatest cities. Desmond, on the other hand, argues that housing and housing related issues are critical to understanding many of the problems facing cities. For the following assignment, I would like you to write a comparative essay explaining which of these books gets it right. Who does the best job diagnosing the problems that exist in our cities? Remember that to explain why Jacobs gets it right also requires you to explain what Desmond and Klinenberg got wrong. Please be sure to include either Desmond or Klinenberg in your essay.
