Everyman is a staple of college British Literature courses. Though not the only allegorical “morality” play of the time, it is one of the most famous. In this play, Everyman stands for, literally, every man. (And woman, perhaps?) Death comes to Everyman and tells him it is his time of reckoning. Of course, Everyman tries to buy his way out of his appointment with death. This play was written by an anonymous English writer who was playing toward the societal belief of the time that hell and purgatory were always just one misstep away and as long as one could outweigh the bad with good deeds, they would make it into Heaven. You can see the changing ideals of the time with the advent of this play. Notice that Everyman barely has a description. If you think back to Sir Gawaine and the Good Knight or Morte D’Arthur, the authors spent time and effort to give the reader a clear vision, not only of the appearance of their characters, but the personalities, honor, code of conduct, interpersonal relationships.

WRITE ABOUT THIS –
The allegorical figures in Everyman may seem trite or cliche by today’s standards. After all, the theme of this play isn’t hard to uncover. I mean, it really doesn’t need to be uncovered at all. The narrator lays out the moral of the story right there for you.

Consider the allegory in this play and answer these two questions.

First, is the allegory in this play appropriate to the message? Give an example from the play.

Second, who are the non-allegorical characters in this play and how do they provide a contrast to the rest of the characters?

ONLY ADD SOURCES IF YOU USE THEM.
