Purpose of Assignment:
This is your opportunity to practice and demonstrate effective writing skills while participating in informed dialogue about the most pressing issues of our day. Perhaps more importantly, this is your opportunity to be assessed on, and to improve, your ability to grapple with core conceptual issues in the field of global environmental change, and to articulate complex thoughts in a succinct, intelligible manner. The response that you will write is designed to encourage peer-to-peer knowledge exchange about the theories, concepts and research covered in the course. All of the blog posts that you will be asked to write will provide you with an opportunity to grapple with fundamental debates in the field of global environmental change. Sharpening your ideas and arguments around these debates will prepare you to make informed and meaningful contributions to the conversations around environmental and resource management in a global context. These debates may include value-based judgements (political differences) as well as fact-based judgements (scientific deficiencies).
Summary of the Assignment
Initial Post
Twice during the term, you are required to post an informed blog post that engages with a core argument / concept discussed in the course. You will then write a response to a blog post written by one of your peers.
Your initial blog post is to be submitted at any time prior to the deadline. See the Schedule in the Outline for specific dates.
Think of this as a blog post by a science writer, which means that it should have the following features:
Compelling and captivating title;
writing style that is professional, yet approachable;
accurate information based on credible sources;
combines factual information with anecdote; and
Makes a very clear and concise argument.
The topic for each blog post is described below. Don’t forget to write a response to the post from one of your peers!
Blog Post 1 Topic:
Increased incidences of forest fires have been linked to climate change. For this blog, you must write about the link, current and future, between climate change and forest fires. These are the sorts of questions to consider. What do we know about the link between forest fires and climate change? Are we likely to see more forest fires in the future? What are the implications to human or environmental health and well-being (do not try to cover both)? Apart from mitigating climate change, what do you think we should do to address this issue? Your proposed option could be to reduce the likelihood that a fire will start or spread or to reduce a critical impact associated with it that you have identified. Think about one practical option only so that you have the space to discuss it with some depth.
For the last two points (implications to human or environmental health and a method to address the issue), you may want to focus on one place, i.e. use a case study approach.
You must use at least one peer-reviewed journal article in your blog post. You will need a second strong source. It may be another peer-reviewed journal article or another strong source, such as an academic book, or a report from a government or inter-government organization (including the IPCC).
