Imagine that a graduation organizing committee for bachelor’s and master’s students has invited you to develop a paper about the value of pursuing doctoral studies that will be included in a folder to be presented to all graduates. You will be drawing on two primary sources to develop your paper: the first will be the assigned readings for this week from The Craft of Research by Booth et al. (2016); the second is Bryan and Guccione’s (2018) article, “Was It Worth It?”
Your paper should be divided into two main sections. In the first section, you will discuss the value of doctoral studies to society in general. You will find the readings from The Craft of Research to be particularly helpful as you develop this section.
In the second section of your paper, you will discuss the value of doctoral studies for individual students. You will find the article by Bryan and Guccione (2018) to be particularly helpful as you develop this section. However, you may use other high-quality sources that you locate in the Northcentral University Library if you wish. Bryan and Guccione’s analysis of personal benefits derived from doctoral studies is broken into four categories: career value, skills value, social value, and personal value. In this part of your paper, you should discuss each of these four categories.
Your discussion of career value should include but is not limited to career fulfillment and professional credibility, both of which are discussed by Bryan and Guccione (2018). Your discussion of skills value should include but is not limited to value should include but is not limited to expanding social networks developed during doctoral studies, and enhanced esteem and status. Your discussion of personal value should include but is not limited to improved self-identity and a sense of achievement and pride.
Although not a requirement for this assignment, you could add meaningful content to your paper by discussing the value of doctoral studies with family members or professional colleagues if they are available to you. Over and above completing this assignment, a discussion with key family members and others who are part of your support network could be of great benefit to you personally. As noted above, engaging in these discussions is not a requirement; however, if appropriate, please report on the insights gained from these discussions without revealing personally identifying information about the individuals you talked to.
As you develop your assignment, use logically constructed paragraphs (not bulleted lists) with accurate spelling, grammar, and sentence structure as expected in doctoral-level writing. Your argument for the value of doctoral studies should be carefully reasoned and supported with the two sources mentioned above and other high-quality sources if you wish to include them.
