Extra Credit Assignment:

Since the outbreak of the Coronavirus, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA)  has had over 5,000 federal employees test positive for COVID-19. While most have recovered approximately 0.05% unfortunately have succumbed to the virus.   A report issued by  The Guardian, entitled "Lost on the Frontline" has  noted that nearly 600 front line health care workers died from COVID-19 between March and July of 2020.  That number has grown substantially in the following months.   Several reports and articles speculated that if everyone wore a mask, the virus could reasonably be contained within two months.  In places like California where there are vaccine and mask mandates in several counties, not to mention requirements to provide proof of vaccination in order to utilize certain facilities, there has been a substantial decrease in the number of confirmed COVID cases.  In other areas like Florida, and Iowa, there have been enormous spikes as some state and local officials are reluctant to impose mandates or additional public safety requirements. The country has seen a significant amount of resistance to wearing masks, social distancing, vaccinations, and other preventative and mitigative measures to curb the spread of the virus.

1.) Why do you believe Americans are resistant to these precautions? If these measures could reasonably reduce the spread of the virus and facilitate a return to in-person activities sooner rather than later, do you think more people would endorse and follow them?

2.)  Additionally, if front-line health care workers,  travel security agents, and other essential personnel are putting their safety at risk to provide services, is it appropriate for the federal government to require vaccine mandates; something that many people may be opposed to?  Or should  mandates only be imposed on those who want to take advantage of services, not the ones who are providing the services? (i.e. mask wearing, vaccinations, social distancing, etc.)

3.) If you could influence government policy on this issue, what would you recommend to resolve this conflict between safety and individual liberty?
