Monument and Memorial Field Exploration Report

The purpose of this project is to combine all key themes presented in this course and create a cohesive short report.

Due Monday, May 5th by 11:59PM


The report will be an analysis of the core concepts analyzed regarding monument culture:

Land, People, and Place

Trauma/Violence and Reconciliation/Reparations

Migration and Identity

Ambiguities and Alternatives

Strategies and Actions

The report should also strongly focus on the following course learning objectives:

-Develop a comprehensive understanding of the cultural and historical significance of monuments and memorials globally, including their role in shaping cultural identity and fostering collective memory.

-Explore and evaluate the ethical dimensions surrounding monuments and memorials, including the impact of cultural appropriation, controversies, and the ethical considerations in preservation or removal of controversial monuments.

-Enhance their critical thinking skills by analyzing and interpreting the design, symbolism, and messages conveyed by various monuments and memorials, considering the socio-political context in which they were created.

-Gain an interdisciplinary perspective by examining the intersection of monuments with various fields, including architecture, politics, social justice, and technology, fostering a holistic understanding of the subject matter.

-Demonstrate an ability to envision and critically analyze the evolving role of monuments and memorials in a globalized world, considering emerging trends, technological influences, and societal changes, and propose informed perspectives on the future trajectory of monument culture.

Assignment Directions:

Each student will select one controversial monument or memorial from any global location to write a report on.

The Monument and Memorial Field Exploration Report will consist of 2 full typed pages, 12 font and double-spaced. A cover page that identifies the student and the monument or memorial is required. A reference page is required. The cover page and reference page do not factor into the page count.

The framework of the report:

1. High level overview of the history of the monument/memorial.

*Discuss when was it founded, by whom, and why.

2. The audience(s) that the monument/memorial serves.

3. A discussion of the present controversies surrounding the monument/memorial.

4. A detailed connection to course material including important themes/concepts (see learning objectives and core concepts above).
