In The Will of the Shogun, events are portrayed more from the point of view of the Shogunate, and a connection is made between the Japanese peasants’ attraction to Christianity and the economic oppression which the peasant class suffered due to the Shogunate’s policies. In Silence, these aspects of the story are in the background. The focus of Silence is more on the faith struggles of the Portuguese Jesuit missionaries, and it is less clear that the faith of the Japanese Christians may be related to the economic and political conditions they are suffering in feudal Japan. By focusing on the missionaries and the cruelty of the Japanese authorities, and by leaving the economic/political oppression of the Japanese peasants in the background, are the filmmakers of Silence being unfair to the Japanese? Are the Japanese treated unsympathetically, as mere props for the drama going on in the psyche of the Westerner?
