1.  Mills argues thatwhile social contract theory has been primarily about justice and rights inthe abstract, theories of the Racial Contract have been concerned withconquest, imperialism, colonialism, white settlement, land rights, race andracism, slavery, jim crow, reparations, apartheid, cultural authenticity,national identity, indigenismo, Afrocentrism, etc. . . . which havebeen central to the political struggles of the majority of the worldspopulation. (p. 4) Explain this overall argument from Mills about the contrastbetween the assumptions of the social contract and his articulation of theracial contract.

2.  I claim in my 2015article on Racism and Discrimination versus Advantage and Favoritism that theultimate white privilege is the privilege not to be a racist and to stillbenefit from the structure of racial inequality. Based on what we have coveredin this course, explain this claim and what evidence supports it.

3.   Several times in thecourse, we talked about the concept of isomorphic attributions as a skillthat could be learned and practiced to be more effective in diverse and globalenvironments. What does this concept mean, why is it important, and whatrelated concepts did we discuss through the semester that are similar in termsof learning how to more effectively interact with people who are different fromus in terms of background and culture?

4.   Dovidio et al. arguethat the creation of ingroups and outgroups is a normal, psychological processthat is part of the efficiency of thinking. Even so, the creation of ingroupsand outgroups can contribute to both intergroup conflict and inequality. Basedon the readings from Brewer, Fiske, Devine, and others, including Dovidio etal, what do we know about ingroups and outgroups, how we respond to them, andhow we reduce likely intergroup conflict?

5.  Despite his analysisof what he calls the Racial Contract, Mills also argues that Whites have achoice and that there have always been some Whites who have been willing tospeak out and struggle against the terms of the contract. (p.107) Similarly,we have talked about contentious politics, anti-racism, and allies andadvocates. Discuss what we know about the efforts to challenge or resist thedomination and oppression that were part of the racial hierarchy that emergedin western Europe and the US and what we need to know about how and under whatcircumstances it can be challenged.
