Labor Consciousness: A Visual and Narrative Reflection Assignment (Worth 20 Total Points)

For this reflection assignment, please reflect on your labor consciousness after engaging in all these activities during the semester. When we discuss the reproduction of an individual’s labor consciousnesses, we are engaged in understanding the individual’s perception and participation in labor structures. Beyond the individual experience, labor consciousness is developed and reproduced through the set of social relations—labor and class relations—through day-to-day activities of engaging in work, the contents of said labor, and the set of inter-personal interactions and activities workers are engaged in said hierarchical labor structures.

For this reflection, please do the following:

1. Upload an image that represents or embodies your thoughts/idea/reflection of labor/work (12 points). This has to be an original image/photo that you are taking for this class. Please do not upload a meme or images from the internet. Certainly, do not upload any copyrighted images. This part of the assignment is meant for you to connect your ideas with some sort of images that connects with said ideas. The image can be as simple an an image captured with your smartphone and depicts your lived labor experience. A picture of daily work routine or activity. Go visit either NPR’s story on Alejandro Cartegena posted on Canvas or visit Cartegena’s Instagram page at alexcartagenamex to draw inspiration. Make your visual unique and connected to your own lived experience. Included with your image should be a short summary of why the image is so important to you or what insight it provides with re: to your labor identity, labor consciousness, and or labor insight.

2. Accompanying the image, write an essay that reflects on labor structures and consciousness from your lived experience (18 points). More specifically, integrate Wright’s idea of "real utopias," and consider whether it is possible to create "real utopias" in your life and community. This portion should summarize Wright’s idea of real utopias drawn from chapters 1 and 2 of the assigned readings. Wright discusses specific harms caused by capitalism. You can connect your lived experience with one of these harms and how your real utopia would eliminate those harms. Further, you can use additional readings that we covered during the semester to support your analysis and ideas as to either the harms of capitalism or creating real utopias. Please note, you should be parenthetically citing your sources in your text and include a bibliography ONLY if you cite to sources other than Wright.

Lastly, your image(s) and the summary accompanying the image will be uploaded on an Instagram account that tries to provide insight into the labor consciousness of our CSULA community members. This will be done in the near future as I work to create an awareness of labor structure and power at and surrounding CSULA.
