TestimonioYou want to “tell a good story”, with plenty of vivid, specific, concrete detail, about how specific lessons, experiences and/or aspects of culture or communities you belong to have shaped you.

Testimonio: Critical Reflection through Personal Narrative in Context with the Narratives of Others (AutoEthnographic)

Definition: Testimonio is a genre of personal narratives that retells historical and/or social significant events from an eyewitness perspective….Testimonio blends two traditionally distinct academic disciplines, history and literature, to help relay personal historical experiences.

Prompt: For this essay, you will explore some aspect/s of YOUR personal story or experience/s in life and present them in form of a testimonio. You will look at your personal engagement with your community, culture, family, education, and other direct spaces you have occupied. You may pick an event from your past, either positive or negative, dramatize it, and then explore it with the purpose of coming to some kind of statement, or insight, about how life works, according to you.

The purpose of the assignment is to understand the rich descriptions of various settings in which learning occurs, the various ways people learn from experience, and the various social purposes writing can have and serve. Learning is not always through books. This paper is also to explore writing as one of our “most powerful human instincts” (James J. Murphy). It is important to learn who we have been so that we can better choose who we will become. You will use mainly descriptive detail, vivid scenes, and reflection to support some central issue or question.

You want to “tell a good story”, with plenty of vivid, specific, concrete detail, about how specific lessons, experiences and/or aspects of culture or communities you belong to have shaped you. It should eventually emerge as an exploratory claim, or speculation about the functions, purposes, or social importance of learning through experience. This is your story, so it needs to be accurate to your experience; it is not intended to be about a joyful lesson learned without depth. Learning is not always joyful. It is supposed to depict some of your experience, in your voice and YOUR NARRATIVE of witnessing your life.

You may take off in one of several directions:

You might look at an influential person or people who helped or hurt your progress.
You might look at some significant event that changed your mind or heart, a discovery, a confirmation or contradiction of a belief, a disappointment, or a decision.
You might look at cultural and community attitudes toward race, class, gender, or learning.
Writing to explore how you have navigated some of experiences for better or worse.
Have you ever judged someone for being too one way or another? Have you had preconceptions or long held stereotypes? What/how have your assumptions or judgements about how someone “should” live affected others? Or people you care for? There is a story lurking beneath the judgment. What does your analysis of others say about you?
You might talk about becoming aware in some part of your life, culture, subculture or group, learning about yourself, or gaining acceptance through assimilation.
**Length: 3 pages full pages minimum, 12 pt., New Times Roman, double spaced (MLA Formatting)**

**You will be graded on the following rubric:

Depth of analysis: Student asks critical questions regarding their understanding of the particular experience/s, events, situations, etc.

Articulated details: Student applies vivid descriptions and clearly describe events. Think of your 5 senses and literary elements of dialogue, metaphors/simile, onomatopoeia, personification, etc.

Coherency & Structure:  The “flow” of the testimonio makes logical sense.

Originality & Creativity: Student clearly explores their history and the purpose of their testimonio is clear.

Grammar; syntax & semantics: Demonstrates control and effectiveness with the language and sentence structure and meets the page requirement.
