Discipline: Comic Spirit

For your final project you will be doing a research paper that explores a text (book, graphic novel, TV show, film, video game, etc) that was not covered in class. This is your chance to interrogate the genre by applying core concepts from the course to something new. You will be using three to four academic sources to support your analysis. Since this is such a major part of your grade you will need to get your topic approved by me by submitting a proposal (see below for proposal details). The objective of a proposal is to present a research idea (this is also sometimes called an abstract). This can be used for submissions to publications and conference presentations or for project approval. So what should be included? In addition to pertinent personnel information, your proposal should start with a working title for your project. Titles should be a creative way to hint to your reader about the subject of your paper. The length of the proposal is usually between 250-500 words. In this short paragraph (or two), you will want to briefly introduce your primary texts, the theoretical approach you will use for your argument, and a working thesis statement. This should also include anything you consider pertinent to your project. While you will not include quotes, you will want to point to areas of the text you plan on utilizing to support your argument. Consider this the ground work for your paper’s introduction. The proposal will have an annotated bibliography with at least 2 secondary sources.

**An annotated bibliography adds a brief description of the source and how it could benefit your research paper.

Tips and Tricks:

  • Remember, your proposal does not lock you into your argument. Many times our final projects evolve away from our initial ideas.
  • Office hours are some of the most under-utilized resources at your disposal. Having one on one feedback about your project with open dialogue can go a long way to giving you the confidence you need to proceed, knowing you are on the right track. To get you through, I will be extending my office hours and I ask that you set an appointment for efficiency.

***Please feel free to visit me during my office hours, or set up an appointment with me at any stage to discuss your ideas for the project.
