I would like you to imagine yourself as a peacemaker and explore what can be done in order to create a socially cohesive society and to foster a democratic culture in post-conflict societies. Please choose one particular theme or issue that you find particularly relevant in contributing to conflict and thus needs to be addressed to create a lasting peace after the conflict is over. For example, based on what you have learned, if you truly believe that economic grievances are a significant contributor to conflict, you can explore different steps that can be taken to improve economic development in a particular society. If you believe that the lack of religious freedom is particularly problematic, then look at what can be done to foster religious freedom. Once you have chosen a theme or issue, please conduct some research (2-3 sources) to learn about what has been done in different societies to address that theme or issue.
In your essay, please answer the following questions:
1) For you, what constitutes a socially cohesive society? How do a democratic culture and the creation of democratic forms of governance help contribute to peace?
2) What specific issue or theme do you think needs to be addressed in order to create a peaceful, democratic and socially cohesive society? Why do you think it is so important?
3) Based on your research, what steps (policy changes, awareness campaigns, educational programs, etc) can be taken to create a lasting peace? Why do you think they will work? What are some likely obstacles?
