Tips

Pickan aspect of the topic that interests you. It is much easier to write a goodpaper if you enjoy what you are writing about. Choose something that you wouldlike to learn more about, not something you are already familiar with. You mustuse new research and cite it accordingly.

Beflexible. As you start your research, you might find a new aspect of your topicthat interests you. You may change your focus if you have enough time todevelop a new one satisfactorily.

Thenarrower the focus the better. If you focus on a specific, narrow aspect of thetopic, it will be easier to research and will result in a more interestingpaper.

Afteryou decide on your approach to the topic, you are ready to start your research.Allow plenty of time to browse through resources to get familiar withinformation on your topic.

Tips

Usethe library. The Internet is a fantastic research tool, but you should not relyon it alone. The library is organized, and you can find great material quicklythere. Once you have a couple of good print sources, you can always doadditional Internet research from any computer.

Takenotes as you go. Whether on the Internet, in the library, or looking through abook, always have a pen and paper handy. That way, you can jot down theinformation and source to use later. Follow these guidelines:

o  Foreach source (book, Web site, etc.) create a note card.

o  Labelit using MLA format for a bibliography entry and write down any potentiallyuseful information on the card.

o  Itis best to write the information in your own words, so you are never tempted touse the exact words of the sources.

o  Besure to include page numbers for later reference and parenthetical citations.

o  Goodnote cards will give you all of the information you need at a glance.

Seethe The Keystone School Writing Guide for details on bibliography entries andparenthetical citations.

Becritical of your source. Some sources you find will not be accurate. It isespecially important to be sure Internet sources are reliable. If you are notsure about a source, ask your instructor.

Startputting the pieces together. Although you are not writing yet, think about howthe pieces of information you are gathering relate to each other. You mighteven start constructing a rough outline during the research process. Sometimes, you will find some missing pieces that will require you to do a little moreresearch to make your paper complete. Save time for this.

Write Your Paper: Requirements

Yourresearch paper should be constructed using a word processing program, such as MicrosoftWord, Microsoft Works, or Word Pad. Macintosh users may also use the Macintoshversion of Microsoft Word. If you do not have one of these word processingprograms, you can use any word processor, a typewriter, or you can access aword processing program at your local library. If you do not have access to acomputer or otherwise cannot type your paper, please note this with thesubmission of your written paper.

Yourpaper must be at least three to four pages in length (double-spaced) in12-point Times New Roman font. This does not include the bibliography, whichshould be on a separate page.

Youmust use a minimum of four resources. At least one resource needs to be a printsource other than your textbook (books, magazines, encyclopedias, journals, etc.).

Organizing Tips

Thinkabout it. Think of your research as puzzle pieces. You have bits and piecesfrom different sources; now think about how they all fit together.

Makean outline. Start to put the puzzle together. Create an outline with three sections:an introduction, the body, and a conclusion. The body will be the largest partby far, but include a thesis and other ideas that you want in the introductionand conclusion.

Incorporateyour research. Figure out where your research pieces fit into your outline.Include the parenthetical citation in the outline so it will be easy to findlater.

Getfeedback. We will not review rough drafts, but your instructor can give youfeedback about your organization and citations. If you are not sure about somethingat this point, you may contact your instructor.

Writing Tips

Interactwith the information. A good paper not only relates facts, it should also showthat the writer (you) really understands the subject through interpretation andanalysis of the information. You should discuss your own original thoughtsabout the subject matter and relate them to your research findings.

Keepparagraphs focused. Each paragraph should focus on one topic. Paragraphs thatrun on and on are usually signs of bad organization.

Transitionbetween thoughts. As you write your paper make sure you use good grammaticaltransitions and similar ideas to tie together your paragraphs.

Revise.Your paper does not have to be perfect the first time around. Sometimes, it isbetter to just focus on getting your ideas on paper first, and then go back andrevise and improve your research paper. Be sure to proofread and edit beforeturning in your paper.

Introducequotes and explain terms. If you use a quote, be sure to tie it into your topicand explain why it is important. If you mention a new term or event that isspecific to your topic, explain it and show that you understand what you arewriting about.
