General instructions. Respond to one of the three questions below. Do not respond to all three questions. Just one, of your choice! Read the questions carefully so you know what you are being asked to do. Write your paragraph first in Google Docs or Microsoft Word or some other word processing program, and then submit to the link above. Stronger paragraphs will be focused, detailed, analytical, and insightful; weaker responses will contain lots of unnecessary summary and/or will be minimally developed, incomplete, confused, vague, or off track. I’m looking for evidence that you are reading actively, with understanding and some insight, and that you are putting thought and care into your responses.
Option 1Character Deep Dive Paragraph. Based on your close reading of “Glory,” write a paragraph that develops one conclusion you can come to about the character of Glory. This is actually asking you to come up with your own idea about this character. Try to make your conclusion insightful, so that you are expressing something true and real and important that gets to the heart of what this character is like and what’s happening with her, in your view. Consider everything you know about her. Back up your points with plenty of specific evidence (specific things the characters say and do and think and feel) and your own thoughtful analysis.  You want the reader to be able to say, by the time they get to the end of your paragraph, “Wow, I get it, Glory really is _______!” [whatever it is that you are claiming about her — and it doesn’t have to be just a single word, as a single word may not be enough to get at the complicated reality of this character]]
Option 2Social Circumstances and Cultural Factors Deep Dive Paragraph. Based on your close reading of “Glory,” write a paragraph that explains and discusses a conclusion that you can come to about the social circumstances and/or cultural factors that are impacting this character — and discuss how, in your opinion, they impact her. (Since, for all of us, our surroundings and environments shape us and mold us in lots of ways.) Challenge yourself to be specific and insightful about the realities of Glory’s world and how she relates to what’s around her, and see what you can infer from the story about its effect on her. Back up your points with specific things the characters say and do and think and feel) and your own thoughtful analysis. You want the reader to be able to say, by the time they get to the end of your paragraph, “Wow, I get it, now I really understand how these different social circumstances and cultural factors are impacting what Glory’s like and even how she acts in the story.”
Option 3Revealing Moment Deep Dive Paragraph. Write a paragraph that looks closely at one revealing moment that you found in “Glory.” A revealing moment in a story like this one can be something that happens in a few lines of dialogue, or could be a part of a scene or even a whole scene — it’s where something of particular interest or importance is revealed that brings an aspect of the story into focus, or that clarifies something about a character. Be sure to explain, briefly, what happens in this particularly revealing moment and what gets revealed for you, and how the moment connects with and illuminates the story overall or perhaps how it illuminates the character of Glory in particular. This is asking you to show your own critical thinking and close analysis about this moment in the story and about the story overall.
