1. Briefly describe the event.  Include a citation to your information source (newspaper, website, etc.). Please choose an event no older than 2019.
2. Based on Levin and McDevitt’s hate crime offenders typology, which type(s) best fits for your chosen event?  Explain why.  Be sure to include the following factors in your discussion: motivation, offender characteristics, precipitating/triggering event (if any), victim identity, and location.  Is the offender part of an organized hate group?
3. What were the consequences for the offender (ie. in terms of prosecution and sentencing)? Do you feel that the consequences are appropriate for the crime you’ve chosen to analyze? (If the crime has yet to be prosecuted, what would you recommend for sentencing?)
4. One distinction between hate crimes and other violent crimes is that hate crimes can traumatize an entire community. Discuss the effect that your chosen event has had on the victim and the larger community that the victim belongs to.
Brief should be 4-5 double-spaced typed pages; please number your responses.
MLA format and citations included.
side note: Just want to remind everyone that the term paper does not need to be about a hate crime – it just needs to be about an event that fits anywhere on the pyramid of hate (this would include instances of discrimination, all the way up to genocide).
