Historical Foundations in Psychological Research [WLOs: 1, 3, 4, 5] [CLOs: 1, 2, 3, 4]

To prepare for this discussion forum, read Chapter 1 of your textbook. In addition, read The 100 Most Eminent Psychologists of the 20th Century (Links to an external site.) and Classic Articles as Primary Source Reading in Introductory Psychology (Links to an external site.) articles. Also, review the Classics in the History of Psychology (Links to an external site.) website. You must also find one scholarly article written by your selected psychologist (see instructions below). Finally, review Instructor Guidance and Announcements.

Theory assists psychologists in better understanding human thought, behavior, and action. Understanding how researchers go about formulating theories is an important foundation in the science of psychology. In this discussion, you will be exploring this process by researching a psychologist, learning about him or her.

To complete this activity,

  • Select one noted psychologist from any of the included lists in The 100 Most Eminent Psychologists of the 20th Century (Links to an external site.) article and locate a scholarly article written by him or her in the University of Arizona Global Campus Library. (As an alternative to locating an article via a search, you may choose one that is identified in Classic Articles as Primary Source Reading in Introductory Psychology (Links to an external site.).) For guidance on what constitutes a scholarly article, review the Scholarly, Peer-Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources (Links to an external site.)
    • Upon entering the library, click on the Advanced Search option in the Search box.

    • Enter the name of your selected psychologist in the search field. Then, select AU Author (or TI Title) in the drop down menu to the right of the search box. In the second search box, enter the word psychology.

    • Below the search boxes, look for the Limit your results section and select Limit to Full Text and Limit to Scholarly/Peer Reviewed.

    • Then, click Search.
    • Note that the library will not have every source, so if you choose a book or an article that is unavailable, try another option.

After you have selected your psychologist and found an article, include the following in your discussion:

  • Summarize the contributions of the influential figure you selected to the field of psychology.
  • Relate pertinent information regarding your selected psychologist and his or her main theoretical contributions to the field.
  • Interpret any empirical work (i.e., research study) that is presented in the article. (Tell us what they found.)
  • Explain how this theory/research provides insight into differences in psychological functioning, considering cultural and social diversity influences. (Why do we do what we do?)

To fully demonstrate content knowledge and critical thinking, the Historical Foundations in Psychological Research discussion must

  • Appraise course concepts explicitly, applying them to your personal experiences/observations, and cite the required readings as appropriate.
  • Be thorough and specific, structuring your work intentionally (with an introductory and concluding sentence or two), providing clear context, and concisely and precisely explaining relevant course concepts.
  • Use personal examples to illustrate as appropriate, but do be sure to provide an objective analysis too, referencing required materials and using additional credible sources as needed to support your insight. For more, see Summary vs. Analysis (Links to an external site.).
  • Use your own Academic Voice (Links to an external site.) and apply in-text citations appropriately throughout your post. For more, see APA: Citing Within Your Paper (Links to an external site.).
  • Your original post should be a minimum of 300 words.

Peer Responses: Review several of your classmates’ posts. Provide a substantive response to at least two of your peers in a minimum of 300 words (each reply), by Day 7 (Monday). Based on your understanding of the reading, add important information to the conversation.

  • What additional questions do you have about the psychologist that your peer summarized? For example, you could ask about his/her contributions to theory and/or research.
  • Are there relevant connections between the work of the influential figure you selected and the individual selected by your peer?
  • Share examples from your own life that illustrate your peer’s chosen theoretical perspective.

Instructor Responses: Review any instructor feedback on your postings. Often feedback is shared to help you to elevate your level of critical thought or make corrections. Reply based on this feedback to advance your understanding of the content addressed.

Observe the following guidelines for all responses:

  • Remember that discussion forums should be conversations; dialogue is encouraged throughout the course.
  • Provide a courteous and interactive learning environment.
  • Continue to monitor this discussion through 5:00 p.m. (Mountain Time) on Day 7 of the week and reply to anyone (instructor or classmate) who has chosen to respond to your original post.
  • Your grade will reflect the quality of your initial post, the depth of your peer replies, and your active support of forum dialogue.
  • Your responses should demonstrate that you have read the existing replies on the board. (In your response, mention information and viewpoints already expressed by existing responses to the same post.)
  • Use your own Academic Voice (Links to an external site.) and apply in-text citations appropriately throughout your post. For more, see APA: Citing Within Your Paper (Links to an external site.).
  • Refer to the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric under the Settings icon above for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated. Select the three dots button above and then select Show Rubric.
