    Assignment Directions
    • This writing assignment is based on the following readings:
      • Kinzer’s Overthrow Chapters 1-4
      • Rosenberg: World War I and the Triumph of the Promotional State (PDF)
    • Write and submit an essay (1,250 to 2,000 words, double-spaced) that examines some major aspects of late nineteenth and early twentieth century U.S. foreign policy/relations.
      • This is an open-ended assignment with many different possibilities. Your task is to analyze several major events, influential figures, important groups of people, key transformations, or guiding ideas/principles from throughout the era that reveal something historically significant about late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century U.S. foreign relations.
        • For example, your essay could explain and analyze the economic motivations of U.S. policymakers and the relationship between American corporations and the federal government in developing U.S. foreign policy in this era. Or your essay could explain and analyze U.S. policymakers’ views on race and how those views affected U.S. foreign policy actions in this era. Or you could analyze key figures (like politicians, policymakers, influential business people) and their roles in various U.S. foreign policy actions. These are just several possibilities, but you may choose to write on other topics as well.
      • It is required that your essay include quotations (and proper citations) from at least two out of the four chapters. It is recommended, however, that you include quotations from three or all four chapters. Students are permitted to include quotations from other readings (from this class or other sources), but the focus of this essay must remain on the assigned readings for this assignment.
      • Your essay should include quotations directly from the author (Kinzer) as well as the individuals/sources that they discuss.
        • Number of quotations can vary but should probably be somewhere between 5 and 12.
