To prepare for this Discussion:

• Review the resources included in the Explore section.
• Assume that your best friend has contacted you for advice on setting up a home network for the family. Your friend wants you to help with the design of the network by providing a list of all the items and services needed to set up the network.
• One of your concerns is that once you help with the network design and setup if anything goes wrong, you will be called upon to fix what could be a very simple problem. To reduce the possibility of such occurrences, you have decided to include a description of the purpose and function of each of the network components and services, hoping that, if problems occur, your friend can perform some basic network troubleshooting without needing to contact you.
• Besides the parents, the family includes three children—ages 8, 13, and 17. The family currently has two Windows PCs, one Apple MacBook, two printers (one a color inkjet printer and the other black and white laser printer), and a TV they would like to have included in the network.

By Day 3

Post the following to the Discussion board:

• Design a simple home network that includes:
  • A list of all the components and services needed to set up the network
  • Include two options for each component and service. One option should be low cost, modest performance: the second option higher cost, high performance.
  • In addition to performance estimates, include an initial cost and monthly cost for each option.
  • A brief description of the purpose or function of each network component or service you included in the design
• Include at least one reference to support your thoughts.
