Research question and sub questions

How can the engagement of high prior attainer (HPA) learners in year 9 be improved by using higher-order thinking techniques?
• What effect does the use of Blooms Taxonomy questioning have on engagement levels of HPA’s?
• Does seating HPA’s together encourage motivation and decrease off task behaviours?

Why I have made the above choices

This research proposal looks to explore the relationship between engagement and the use of higher order thinking techniques. Particular attention will be paid to HPA learners classified by a KS2 SAT’s score of above 120 in reading. The focus will be a year 9 class of mixed abilities.

From class observations I have noticed HPA learners often complete their work faster than the rest of the class leading them to be disengaged and at times off task. Therefore, the aim of this project is to see if by using higher order techniques, engagement levels are increased.

Although the progress 8 score for the school is an impressive 0.47, the progression of HPA learners is at the expected levels. A possible reason for this might be because these students aren’t being stimulated enough within the classroom.

The class I plan to do my research on are a class of 28 with only 6 girls. This may not be significant, however, when compared to another year 9 class that has 26 pupils of which 3 boys, the motivation and engagement levels are noticeably lower. There does seem to be a ‘bravado’ type energy within 9c/1, and I wonder if by using higher order techniques this energy could be honed and transformed into enthusiasm, motivation and engagement.

The department are aware of the need to stretch HPA learners and the head is pleased for me to focus on this group. The mentor would like to see higher order questioning, as well as group work because he too believes it will improve engagement levels.

I’m especially interested in Blooms Taxonomy and I think the model and works will aid this research.
