Choose any topic within your academic major and identify a current or historic debate, controversy, or dispute relating to that topic. Frame this debate as a pragmatic or conceptual problem that needs to be addressed in some way. Make your discussion comprehensible and interesting for a general audience, not just for those within your field. For this research essay, you will articulate a significant problem, or question, and lay out in an organized manner an evidence-based solution/s, or answer/s. Before you start writing, make sure to gather enough concrete evidence (primary sources, illustrations, anecdotes, statistics, quotes, etc, from academic articles, textbooks, newspapers, magazines, full-length books, etc.) to support your claims. This research paper is an assignment that falls under the domain of humanities (i.e. art, law, languages, religion, history, anthropology, human geography, literature, and philosophy) rather than mathematics and the sciences. For practical purposes this means that you are allowed to speculate, hypothesize and to make opinion-based claims that don’t necessarily have to be supported by evidence, and to venture outside the evidence. In fact, you are more than allowed but are actually expected to do that, because otherwise it would be too easy for the research paper to become just a summary of sources, where the writer’s voice is completely lacking or underdeveloped. Do not over-summarize the findings of others, and do not allow sources to be the guiding principle of your organization, otherwise you are just writing an encyclopedia entry. Articulate a high-resolution central argument and allow that to be the guiding thread of the research paper. Here are other element you may want to incorporate into your research paper: • demonstrate the problem/question’s seriousness, • discuss analogous problems and whether we can learn anything from them for the problem under discussion • discuss alternative solutions or explanations, conceding their strengths but emphasizing their weaknesses You will give a brief oral presentation on your research paper findings/ conclusions. Without any Powerpoint, speak about what motivated to select the topic, what is its larger social significance, and what you found.
