Qualitative Research Reflection Paper Guidelines
Section I: Introduction
• Begin with a brief summary of the article:
o Research problem/What research question are the researchers trying to answer?
o Who was being studied?
o What was the overall conclusion(s)?
Section II: Critique of Qualitative Topic
• Then answer the questions below for the qualitative topic you were assigned.
1. Design (type of qualitative design)
a. What type of design is used in the article you were assigned?
b. What helped you identify the type of design used in the article (HINT: Think about the unique characteristics of each of the different qualitative study designs, which ones were present in the article you reviewed? )
c. What are the characteristics of the sample method?
d. Is it an appropriate design to use for this research? Why or why not?
2. Sampling (sampling method/type and sample size)
a. What sampling method/type did the researchers use? How were you able to determine this?
b. What are the characteristics of the sampling method?
c. Do you think the sampling method used is appropriate? Explain why or why not.
d. Do you think the sample size was sufficient? Explain why or why not.
3. Data Collection
a. How was data collected from the study participants?
b. Describe the data collection methods used
c. Do you think the methods they used to collect data from study participants was appropriate? Explain why or why not.
4. Themes
a. Identify and describe the themes that resulted from the research study.
b. Do you think the themes that were indicated describe the results well? Explain why or why not.
Section III: Reflection
• Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the article
• What aspects of the study did you like? What did you not like?
• Is there anything you wish the researchers included that was not covered?
• What are your ideas for future research? Explain
