HIST 260 History of Latin America Memoir of a Basque Lieutenant Nun Essay Assignment Catalina de Erauso’s story is a surprising one and at first glance it appears a unique one; after all how many women fought as conquistadors in Spain’s conquest of the New World. However, in her story we also get a glimpse of what life was like on the Spanish frontier. Catalina’s story is a primary source and tells us a lot about life in 17th century Peru and Chile as the Spanish establish their empire in South America. Careful reading of her memoir allows us to examine the gender expectations for Spanish women and men; to identify the social customs of the time and to consider what role law and the church played in Spanish colonial society in the 17th century. Using Catalina de Erauso’s memoir, write a 4-5 page essay which discusses what life was like in 17th century Peru and Chile. You may consult the book’s Foreword to prepare for your paper, but your essay should focus on the information contained in her memoir. You must use endnotes or footnotes. This essay will require you to develop and support a thesis, It should not be a retelling of the story. Your essay will be assessed using the MEAL rubric.
