The Research paper is about Identity Politics. The professor has left it open ended. He has only sent one source as a starting point for the essay
The essay should be five to seven or eight pages in length (i.e., 1250-2000 words). It should focus on identity politics, using the linked essay by Mark Lilla below as a point of departure.
In preparing the essay I’d like you to do a modest amount of your own research, bringing in essays or even a book or two that you find important as you make your points and arguments. Make sure to do more than cite and summarize what others say: quote them at sufficient length to show that they stand where you say. Try to focus the general theme on specifics that interest and excite you: examples from here or abroad, particular issues here or elsewhere that turn on the theme of identity and identity politics.
Make sure to define your terms with care. What exactly do you mean by identity and identity politics? Are these terms useful and helpful–or perhaps confounding and distracting? How do these ideas tie in with issues of free expression that we have discussed this semester?
Here is the Lilla essay. You will find that it became a cause célèbre, especially among Left-leaning intellectuals… The majority criticized it; but almost everyone conceded that he had an important perspective. People interviewed him here and there; people argued with him in many, many articles and essays. (It may help you to know that he is an expert on, among other things, religion and France; he teaches politics at Columbia.) You may be curious to see him speak: YouTube has a number of short videos of him speaking or in discussion on politics, identity, authority, etc.
