Immigrating to the States: Diaz’s stories document life in the Dominican Republic ("Aguantando") as contrasted with life in the United States ("Invierno"). In "Aguantando," Yunior spent his childhood in the Dominican Republic with his mother and brother, but without his father. Then, in "Invierno," he immigrates to New Jersey with his family, to join his father.
Discuss how these characters’ lives change once they immigrate from their homelands to the U.S. What are some of the changes must they undergo, and how does their environment change their characters, their personalities, the ways in which they live their lives and, most especially, their relationships with one another? Be specific, and use short textual references from the stories to support your arguments.
