• Essay 1 – Rhetorical Analysis

In a minimum of 500 words, please compose a complete rhetorical analysis of Baldwin’s “Notes of A Native Son” using the following thesis statement:

In Notes of A Native Son, James Baldwin uses [Logos, Pathos, and/or Ethos] to illustrate an experience as a member of a non-dominant culture.

You may choose to use one, two or all three of the appeals in the thesis statement. Whatever you decide to use in your essay, that is what you will state in the thesis statement. (remove the brackets and just state which appeals you’re using.

You must use the above thesis statement exactly. Do not alter the thesis statement. Remember, a rhetorical analysis examines how the author is using the appeals to reach the audience. This is not a summary of the text or a comment on the themes of the text, but rather how the author uses techniques to reach the audience and accomplish the purpose.
