The article I chose for my In the News assignment discusses the growing epidemic of sexually transmitted diseases in adolescents. It is a known fact that STIs are on the rise in the US and more so among young adults. This results from a variety of different things. Among those things are proper screening, prevention efforts and treatment strategy. The increase in cases is a cause for concern as the lack of prevention is creating a huge risk factor for our adolescent community. The major barrier the article discuss are the lack of confidentiality and access to health services. Most of which have to be completed through another party such as a parent or guardian. For a young teen to get the care and services they need they are required to go through their legal guardian which in most cases is the major obstacle when seeking treatment. Based on recent studies approximately 20 million new sexually transmitted infections, half of cases occur among adolescents aged 15-24 years (Shannon 2018).

This article pertains to my Healthy People condition because it is a direct article discussing the issues of sexually transmitted diseases in society, more importantly among the younger generation. As the article discusses STI rates in the United States are on the rise, in both males and females, and much of this increase is occurring in adolescents. (Shannon 2018). This is because behaviorally adolescents are more prone to partake in high-risk behavior with little disregard for consequences.

Regarding biomedical perspective or prevention perspective the article takes a more preventative approach. By analyzing statistics such as the prevalence of HPV in adolescents it was stated that 58.7% of females ages 20-24 were infected with HPV. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention suggest certain measure that can be implemented such as additional testing and vaccination at an earlier age. Other preventative measures can be implemented as well to create a stronger foundation for protective measure for families.

The article touches upon all levels of the socio-ecological model. The model takes into consideration the person, relationships, organizations, and community. The growing spread of STIs in adolescents is increasing because of the individual acts of those adolescents. By partaking in promiscuous activity adolescents are spreading the STIs with every relationship they have. Without taking proper safety measure this becomes a larger issue effecting the community and public. With the persistent outbreak of STIs and lack of preventative measures the spread continues the grow. This also poses other issues such as medication shortages when those in need must seek care.
