You can complete this assignment  in a variety of ways.  If you are confused on how to process and write the assignment the following is a step by step process to help you get started.

  1.  Be sure to define the concepts.  We discussed them throughout the course and I highlight them as you went through the course.  Go through your notes or reread the introduction of each week’s module.  I also suggest you find sources that defines the concepts chosen.  In your research you could type in the concept and “movies” or “films”, a researcher may have applied the concepts to a film.  You can then choose that film and add to the research study.  For example, (you can’t choose this film)–Prince of Tides is heavily discussed by researchers and professors in psychology.  You will find lots of research with the concepts that is applied to the film.
  2. Choose your character based film.  This is important you want a film that develops the characters, usually Oscar based films are good to choose from.
  3. When watching the film, look at it from a critical eye.  So look for signs of the concepts.  You may have to pause the film and take notes on what the character (s) said and behavior performed.  You may have to watch the film twice.  So please give yourself time to complete this project.  You may need (4-6 hours) which includes viewing the film and writing the paper.
  4. Then write your introduction.  (After reading the paper you may tweak the introduction a little before submission)
  5. Next, write a brief introduction to the film, introducing the reader to the characters and plot.
  6. The next paragraphs are about defining the concepts, using your research, what you understand about the concept, and then apply your knowledge to the film.  Be sure to provide specific examples from the film that exemplifies the concepts.  I also suggest analyzing and applying one concept at a time.
  7. Lastly, write your conclusion paragraph.
  8. Another way to help with writing the paper: When answering the questions asked of you.  Be sure to use the specifics of the question and examples from the movie in your answer.  For example, when we write cover letters and resumes, we are encouraged to use key words and phrases from the job description in the cover letter and resume.  Then in the Work Experience section of the resume, we are encourage to list the skills and contributions from the job being shared under the work experience.  This demonstrates to the employer that you have the skills needed for the job.  Students are practicing this cover letter and resume writing skill when they complete Film Analysis papers.   The professor is looking for students to use the key words and phrases of the question when providing an answer to the question.  Additionally, the professor is looking for examples from the movie that relates to the key words and phrases.
