Assignment Prompt
Write a 5-7 page argumentative essay that takes a clear position on an issue you care about. You may respond to one of the prompts below, or you may choose your own topic. If you choose your own topic, you must notify me before you begin writing so that we can discuss your rationale for choosing the topic.
Prompts (just a short list)–also known as research questions:
- Are social networks good for society?
- Is targeted advertisement bad?
- Should SUVs be made illegal?
- Should attendance in college classes be mandatory?
- Should a terminally ill individual have the right to terminate his/her life?
- Should colleges abolish grades and establish a pass/fail system of evaluation?
- It is justifiable or moral to use animals in research?
- Should it be illegal for companies to produce and sell cigarettes?
- Should all students under the age of 21 be required to complete high school?
- Should colleges allow students and faculty to carry a legally-owned weapon on campus?
Details
The introductory paragraph of your paper should include a sentence to “hook” your audience, a few sentences of background information on the issue, and a thesis statement (claim) that presents an arguable point. The body paragraphs should focus on the reasons you are taking the position and be supported by logical reasons and relevant and reliable evidence. In the final paragraph, you should bring the essay to a logical end by reminding your readers of your position, summarizing the main points, and making one final statement that will leave a lasting impression.
Purpose
To present a well-thought-out and researched argument that will persuade your reader to consider or even accept your position on your chosen topic. Remember, the goal is not to pick a fight; you are reasoning with your audience and will need to appeal to the reader’s values and concerns in order to convince them of the merit of your position.
Your Audience
Your audience is an open-minded, educated reader who may or may not share your point of view.
Tone
The language and stylistic choices should be appropriate for your audience.
Minimum Requirements
- 5-7 pages long and formatted according to MLA guidelines. Include Annotated Bibliography (which includes works cited)
- At least three current and reliable scholarly articles to support your position. You may use sources from the Internet as long as you have determined that they are credible. Be sure to review the rules for incorporating researched information into your paper and the information on plagiarism.
- Include an original title that reflects the topic of the paper.
- Include an introductory paragraph, 3-5 body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph.
- Include a thesis statement that presents your topic and the position you are taking on that topic.
- Include at least three major points as support for your argument.
- Include some or all of the following types of evidence to support your claim: facts, statistics, examples, observations, and expert opinion. Choose your evidence wisely. Don’t use just any examples to support your thesis; use examples that provide the best support for your thesis.
- Include consideration of opposing viewpoints.
- Include emotional appeals to readers’ needs and values.
- Introduce and elaborate upon quotations; do not just “drop” them into your writing.
- Organize your paper logically— from least important point/reason to most important point/reason— with clear topic sentences and transitions to move the reader along and show relationships between ideas within your paper.
- Use third person point of view and present tense.
- Pay careful attention to grammar, usage, and mechanics.
