This week we have focused on the perfectibility of man via Jefferson’s views for the nation.  In many ways, they are a stark contrast to the strict constitutionalism he began his presidency with and with what we saw in our last unit concerning the definition of the nation.  Think back to the Northwest Ordinance–it’s peculiar that land for schools must be allotted and the desire to be self-sufficient–and compare that to how the nation grew with the Louisiana Purchase. At the same time, the south saw itself booming with cotton from developments like the Cotton Gin.
Hence, use your material from this week and focus on two aspects of this era that you find the most compelling.  Tell us why they are so important, what is so meaningful from them, and why they still matter (as we all know, analysis and context always matter).
