Job Application Project

For the job application project in EH 301, students will produce two resumes and two cover letters in response to two specific job ads advertising positions for which they are qualified, either now or upon graduation( in fact, one of each works very well). After analyzing the job ads carefully, students will create resumes by applying the principles of resume development discussed in class lectures and readings. Students can use an existing resume, but must revise it substantially to match the job ads and course expectations. Each resume should be customized specifically for the job it will be sent to, so the resumes should differ, either slightly or substantially, in order to reflect the specific criteria of the job ad and the company that placed the ad. For best results students should choose different subfields in which to search job ads. In addition to the resume, students will write a one-page cover letter explaining their qualifications to a potential employer. Cover letters should refer to material in both the resume and the job ad. Cover letters should also be catered to each job ad and company, so the two submitted cover letters should differ, either slightly or substantially. Students should write an original cover letter for the project. Students should avoid using templates for their resumes other than for inspiration. Resumes should be clear, concise, well-formatted, and specific. Cover letters should also be clear, concise, professionally formatted, and specific. See the Gerson rubric for more information on how projects are graded. Students who are applying for graduate school, law school, or medical school have the option of producing a CV and personal statement for a specific program instead of a resume and cover letter. For more guidance on that option consult your instructor. Students choosing this option should also submit two personal statements customized to different graduate programs (or one job resume and one grad program application packet). The Job Application Project is due by the time and date indicated in Canvas. Students should submit their resume packages as one MS Word file. It should be constructed in two sections. Yes, it will be a long document but we won’t be printing them. Your project should contain, in this order: Section A (Job or Program 1) 1. the job ad (qualified for now) 2. cover letter (or personal statement if applying to a Grad Program) 3. resume (or curriculum vitae if applying to a Grad Program)
Section B (Job or Program 2)
1. the job ad (qualified upon graduation)
2. cover letter (or personal statement if applying to a Grad Program)
3. resume (or curriculum vitae if applying to a Grad Program)
For the Draft: Students should use “track changes” in MS Word to show the material that differs in each resume and cover letter so it is easy for the instructor to identify Students who do not include this “Track Changes” feature will not be permitted to submit a final copy for this assignment. Please construct your document in the following way: 1. Create Section A and its contents 2. Add section B1 3. Copy A2 and A3 into section B below B1 4. Turn on “Track Changes” 5. Transform the copied A2 and A3 into B2 and B3 by revisiting the Audience Analysis sheets you made for each and transforming the content you pasted into something tailored specifically to Audience B. Note: after you turn on track changes you can adjust the way you view the edits you are making in Word using the Tracking block of the review tab in the ribbon. Students should also provide the full text of the job ad (or graduate programs) that their resume and cover letter respond to in A1 and B1. These things are dynamic and often disappear so a link alone is not sufficient.
For the Final Copy: PDF files are the recommended standard because they preserve document formatting. You should correct all changes that you tracked and resolve all comments that have been made and then save as a PDF.
The project is worth 10 points or 10% of the final course grade
