What is the effect of including the long stories told by individual characters in the text of Joe Turner’s Come and Gone? By long stories, think about the moments in the play when there is a break in the regular dialogue and one of the characters tells the other(s) about an event that has happened to him or her in the past. How do the stories affect the rhythm of the play and the audience’s or reader’s response?

and write a short essay (1 1/2-2 pages), that includes your responses to the following questions:

  1. What do we come to learn about the character from the story?
  2. What images in the story make the strongest impression on you?
  3. How does the story relate to the events of the play and the play’s meaning?
