John Mearsheimer and Kenneth Waltz both agree that the structure of the international system forces states to behave in certain kinds of ways. However, they disagree about what this means for international politics. In a short two page paper (double spaced – with any reasonable bibliographical style) describe the different assumptions made by Waltz’s version of realism and Mearsheimer’s version of realism and explain why Mearsheimer’s version of realism is more pessimistic than Waltz’s.
