Recognizing and Being Open to Possibility as a Leader

Background: Hierarchies exist in American culture and the healthcare system that impact how people relate to one another and how much power they have in different interactions. For example, as you know, whereas men hold the majority of leadership positions in American healthcare, in nursing men are the minority. However, male nurses still, on average, make more money and advance faster in their field than female nurses do. The traditional hierarchy of “men being in charge” and having authority has been successfully challenged in many ways, but it can still be observed if you look for it. Secondly, you read The Art of Possibility, which discusses some strategies you can use in your interactions with other people to be open to possibilities for learning in those interactions. Even situations that seem 100% bad contain possibilities in them for learning something new or improving your own understanding of your work and yourself. An awareness of the hidden (and sometimes not so hidden) hierarchies in our culture as well as an openness to possibility in our interactions with others will help you to be a more calm and relatable leader.

Instructions: After reading the  book, please respond to both of the following:

1) After reading the article “Structural Inequality and Diversity in Nursing”, take a look at page 5 at the section “Oppressed group behaviors in nursing.” Make a list of at least three specific instances when you have observed these characteristics, either in those you work with or in yourself. Briefly describe some of the details of these instances and how you felt about them at the time.

2) Based on your reading and reflection on rules one through twelve in The Art of Possibility, choose four of the twelve rules that you found most interesting and relevant to your own life experiences.

a) List the four rules

b) For each rule, describe what it means to you and why you think it is relevant or useful to your personal/professional life.

c) For each rule, give a specific example of its relevance to your personal/professional life, citing the book and any other sources as needed to support your answer.
