From the way she stared at me, I realized that the person I love most in this world didn’t have any memory of who I was; however, I was so grateful that she was finally awake that I couldn’t have cared less about how she saw me. I did my best to quell the urge to break down in front of the rest of my family, especially my younger brother, while my mom confusingly took in the white and undecorated walls of the ICU room. My mother had been diagnosed with Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP). TTP is a one in a million type disease that causes blood clots throughout the body’s vessels, which prevents oxygenated blood from reaching major organs and also drastically lowers platelet levels. She had been in a coma for the past three days; however, she had finally woken up and this was the first time I had seen her since the drive to the hospital. While she was awake, she wasn’t very aware, and the doctors concluded that she would need to stay in the hospital to be monitored until her platelet levels had returned to normal. This meant that, for the first time in my life, I was going to have to live without my mother. The month my mother was hospitalized for is the most adversity I have ever faced. However, it was during this month that I discovered the importance of smiling in the face of adversity because adversity doesn’t care about how you feel.
The relationship my mom and I shared wasn’t the typical mother-son relationship where she would tell me to do something, and I’d release a heavy sigh and do it; instead, I viewed my mom as my closest friend. She’s the person who pushed me out of my comfort zone of being the shy kid who wasn’t confident in his appearance, she’s the person that reassured me that everything would turn out great as long as I did my best, and she’s the one who understood me better than anyone else. Without her, I wouldn’t be the person that I am today.
While my mom was hospitalized, I struggled to cope with the change in workload and structure from middle school to my freshman year in high school. I wasn’t able to focus on the material as I was preoccupied with thoughts of “How’s mom doing?” and “How could something like this happen to us?” There were even times at home that I would go to my room and break down to give myself some emotional relief. I would continue to feel sorry for myself and have these emotional breakdowns until the next time I was able to visit my mom. By this point, she was completely aware, so aware in fact, that the first thing she said after hugging me was, “What happened to your grades?” I couldn’t help but smile at the thought of my mom checking her son’s grades as soon as she came back to her senses. I explained my situation to her as I knew that trying to lie to her would only prolong the embarrassing conversation. Once I finished telling her the story, she pulled me in for a hug, which immediately put me at ease. She explained to me that bad things happen all the time and that there’s no way to justify them. The only thing you can do is put on a brave face and be thankful for what you have.
Even after my mom recovered and was able to come home, this lesson stuck with me and has changed the way I view adversity. Most people view adversity as a solely negative experience and don’t see how anything good can come out of it; however, they fail to see how adversity is just another experience that helps to develop us as people.
