(Literacy Narrative)Instructions

Assignment:

All colleges and universities require students to taketransfer-level courses in academic writing in other words, courses like ENGWR300. But whether you have completed previous college writing courses or havejust begun your first semester at American River College, its likely that thiswont be the first time youve had to write for school. The purpose of thisessay is to explore your current writing process and explore how you want togrow as a writer this semester by building on strengths and/or overcomingchallenges.

A good low-stakes way to start this essay is to do somefreewriting to explore your attitude towards writing and your current writingprocess. Use some of these questions to get started:

( Doyou have favorite writing memories? Do you have any negative or downrightpainful memories associated with writing? What happens when you write?  Dowords come easily, or do you feel paralyzed?  Do you need peace and quietwhen you write or like to listen to music?  What do you think about whenyou write? Do you write “shitty first drafts” like Lamott, or is yourfirst draft often your final draft? What was your experience with writing inschool? Did your instructors offer constructive feedback and opportunities forrevision?  Did you have to write using a specific formula, for example, afive-paragraph essay?)

If you like, you couldfocus on a particular feature of your writing process and explore to whichextent it improves your writing or presents a challenge: Is it an area ofstrength on which you want to build? If so, how? Does it preventyou from writing as effectively as you want to? If so, in what ways might youchange this part of your process?

Because this essay also involves using the assigned readings, you’ll have to explain which ideas or writing strategies explained in thearticles help you understand your own writing process or which of thestrategies you plan to include in your own writing process this semester. Bespecific.

Note: This assignment does not assume that your writing needsimprovement. It only asks you to explore ways to develop and grow as a writerthis semester. And while it is meant primarily to help you develop youracademic writing, dont hesitate to mention any non-academic writing in whichyou engage, such as texting or creative writing. Consider how these may berelevant to your academic writing process. As part of your final portfolio, youll evaluate the extent to which you achieved your hopes for growth as anacademic writer.

Learning Outcome:

This assignment asks you to do two things: exploring yourwriting process and discussing the reading, and you will find that integratingthe two will be a challenge, so the essay is practice for working with sources, something you’ll have to do in most of your college essays and much writingbeyond college. Use this first assignment to experiment with your writing andto put content before structure. For this reason, the main learning outcome forthis essay is: synthesize concepts and evidence from complex texts andsources.
