In this Lesson, you will choose a published poem of at least 14 lines. It may be from any culture or time period. Just have your teacher approve your selection. You will analyze the poem and write a literary analysis. This essay is also called an interpretive analytical essay. This essay should be written in third person. It should simply examine how the poetic devices create meaning. It should not contain personal opinions or copy the ideas of other critics. You will have to prove your thesis (idea) about the poem with evidence using quotes from the poem

Guidelines for Typing and Organizing an Essay

Use the following guidelines for your essay. The model essay illustrates these guidelines.

1 Use Times New Roman font and 12 pt. font size in a 500700 word essay.

2 Double space; put page numbers on the top right.

3 Begin the essay with an introductory paragraph that has a thesis. (The thesis is the conclusion of all the evidence in the essay.)

4 Write 35 body paragraphs that give evidence for the thesis.

5 Each body paragraph will have a topic sentence.

6 End with a concluding paragraph.

7 Revise to achieve a high score by following the grading rubric requirements.

8 Provide a copy of the poem with your final essay draft to your teacher for grading.
