Here is where you can upload the rough draft of your Research Essay.
For the remainder of the semester, you will be researching and drafting an essay that places an author’s work into its literary movement. You will craft a thesis that lays out the way in which the author uses one of the characteristics or themes. For example, a student’s thesis might read something like: “Rebecca Harding Davis adheres to Realism through the character Deborah to show how character is more important than plot, ethical dilemma is key to a character’s development, and that a character and nature are interrelated.
The essay should be around 1,200 words and use MLA formatting and citations.
You are to have a minimum of four sources through the library’s database (You may have up to two from Dr. Campbell’s site if approved). Here is a link to the literary databases:

Here is a helpful handout on MLA citation for literature:

- Also, for in-text citation for short stories, use “the narrator” but for poetry use “the speaker.”
- Lead in to your quotes as noted in the MLA for Literature handout. Do not just plop them in and do not end a paragraph with a quote but rather explain the significance.
- Use feedback from your first essay and midterm to help with revising your essay.
- The library sources do have a “cite” button, but make sure to choose MLA and to double check it.
- I am opening up a voluntary rough draft. If you would like feedback, please submit it there by the due date.
