READINGS:

  • Read Textbook Chapter 1 (institutional pressures on news). PDFs are provided here in case your textbook hasn’t arrived yet.
  • Read Textbook Chapter 8 (the media are commercial).
  • Scroll to explore the latest news and postings on the website for the advocacy nonprofit Free Press. Also, to see which companies own various media outlets (and how many outlets they own and how many people they reach), go to FreePress.net Ownership Chart then on that page, click on the link for “These Interactive Charts” to bring up an excel spreadsheet with tabs broken down by media industry. It was last updated in 2017, but I can’t find anything more recent.
  • Pick ONE of the many reports by the nonprofit Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) to examine their assessments of objectivity and equity across various news programming (notice they have the dates of the reports next to them): https://fair.org/study/

(include some specific examples from the two websites).
  4. What topics/issues do you think deserve more attention or reframing in the news and what topics deserve less attention? Justify why this would be beneficial and for whom.  (note: This question is not associated with any particular reading, but you can make connections if you’d like).
