Presentation Topics:

Topic Directions
1.       Sell your program to employers (not students)

WEEK 4

Teach your classmates how to sell their education in a job interview. What are the benefits of your program over others? What makes it unique? Why should an employer hire you over someone from Ottawa U, Carleton, or other post-secondary programs? Review the program learning outcomes, and use specific examples of assignments you have done so far. Students should be able to use the information from this presentation to convince an employer to hire them over a university graduate in job interviews.
2.       Should I have a LinkedIn Profile?

WEEK 5

Beyond a Resume presents you with the benefits and possibilities for Linked in. What are some potential problems or risks? Do the benefits outweigh the risks? Are there alternatives for creating an online presence without using LinkedIn (i.e. blogging, personal website, other career profile sites)? Walk students through at least two alternatives. What do you recommend?
3.       Professional Associations

WEEK 6

Research professional associations such as APICS, and then compare/contrast each organization’s membership benefits, knowledge and skills, certifications, and career road map. Include salary information related to different certifications. Recommend associations you think would be most useful for students in your program.
4.       Importance of Extra-curricular Activities

WEEK 6

Research the importance of extra-curricular activities and volunteering to employers reviewing your resume or LinkedIn Profile. Research activities at Algonquin including student teams, clubs and associations. Show students how to find out about the clubs, and the benefits of membership (esp. leadership opportunities). Recommend specific clubs and associations that you think would be of most interest and benefit to your classmates, and inform them about creating their own clubs. Recommend volunteer opportunities in Ottawa that would benefit students in your program.
5.       How to Research an Employer

WEEK 7

What research should you do to help you decide what companies you might be interested in working for (i.e. top employers lists, current events, glassdoor)? What information should you find out about companies you have an interview with (use page 415 of the Interviews and Follow Up PDF on Blackboard as a starting point)? Use at least one specific company as an example.
6.       Job Search Websites

WEEK 7

Research the effectiveness of job search sites in general and use at least two specific sites as examples. How many people actually find work through these sites? Which ones would be most useful for students in this program? Walk students through the features of the two sites you chose.
7.       In-Person Networking Techniques

WEEK 9

Research the importance of face-to-face networking, types of networking events, what networking events are available in Ottawa, how to build a network, and techniques for breaking the ice, starting and maintaining conversations with new people at networking events, and following up afterward. Include information on printing, handing out and collecting business cards.
8.       Workplace Harassment

WEEK 11

Define harassment and define and classify behaviours that may be classified as harassment (refer to Ontario’s Human Rights Code). Present employer and employee obligations regarding harassment and what you should do if you think you have been harassed. Provide contact information for victims. Use some high profile cases such as Jian Gomeshi, Bill O’reilly, and the RCMP to provide examples and get audience attention.
9.       Life Long Learning

WEEK 11

Define Life-long learning and its benefits. Research trends in life-long learning. What kinds of training/upgrading would likely be required for a career in supply chain management? You may refer to opportunities available in professional associations, but remember that there is a separate presentation on that topic.
