Overview

This module/week will cover certain methods of organizing and displaying quantitative and qualitative data with an emphasis on the purpose of these tools and their appearance in psychological research. This module/week will cover the construction and interpretation of frequency tables as well as different types of graphs and charts. Two particular kinds of graphs will be emphasized as examples throughout the module/week: the bar chart and the histogram. The importance of understanding graphed distributions according to their shape and skewness will be presented, as will the difference between well- and poorly-constructed graphs. Finally, you will learn the importance of being able to communicate data in current APA format.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

• Construct different types of frequency tables, including simple, grouped, and cumulative frequency tables.
• Explain the purpose of graphs and charts and the different types of each.
• Construct a histogram depicting frequencies for scale-level data and a bar chart depicting scores or frequencies for nominal- and ordinal-level data.
• Identify issues related to faulty or biased graphs.
• Construct a frequency table, histogram, and bar chart in SPSS.
• Write an APA Participants section using SPSS output.
