After completing the reading assignment and the watching the videos, please write a 2 page (700 word, double space, 1 inch margin, Times New Roman 12) paper that analyzes the movie scene (Crash 2004). The expectation is to find (indicate) as many larger social phenomena as possible, which appear to be role players in shaping the interactions between the actors of the scene. In other words, you are expected to apply sociological imagination (seeing the general in particular) to the scene.
All you need to do is to analyze the movie scene by applying the “sociological imagination.” First, you need to watch the video lecture? I am explaining “SEEING THE GENERAL IN PARTICULAR” in that lecture and the purpose of this assignment is to do an exercise in terms of how to “see general by looking at particular”. Things that we see in this movie scene refer to “THE PARTICULAR” and we will be trying to see (find) “GENERAL”(larger social influences). Racism is one of them, for instance. Why did the police officers stopped that vehicle? How did they treat the man and the woman and why? What was the criminal act? How many different criminal acts did you see in this scene? What did the police officers do about that criminal act? Why? What should they have done?
By looking at what is going on between the actors of the film you should be able to see those larger social influences such as race, social status, etc.
Please be reminded that there are many different types of interactions between the heroes of the scene. For instance, we see an interaction between the two cops, and another one between the couple, and another one between the cops and the couple etc. And it is possible for us to find larger social phenomena that appear as role players in terms of shaping those interactions.
For example, how does the younger officer feel about the situation? What did he do? Why? —– Please conduct a quick research on total institutions and Milgram experiment and try to find the answers there. (This is only one of the points you are supposed to cover in your papers)
