For this assignment, look back through the Characteristics of Romanticism for guidance. (Hint.)

Part One:   Choose an excerpt from one piece of music from one of the Romantic era composers below. Listen to it a few times. I don’t expect you to listen to an entire symphony, of course, but a segment of a few (maybe 10 or 15) minutes of any of their pieces will suffice.  You must include in your essay the name of the composer, the title of the work, and the exact segment/times of that selection. Put that at the beginning of your essay, please. (The format you use for the citation is up to you.  If you want, you can also include a Youtube link to make things easier for me!)

Think about the emotions you feel as you listen and write them down as the music plays.

Ludwig von Beethoven

Hector Berlioz

Frederic Chopin

Franz Schubert

Part Two: Choose the most significant emotional response you had on your list.  Go back and listen to the selection again and make note of the formal elements of the piece—instrumentation, pitch, tempo, etc–that made you feel that emotion.  DO NOT GIVE ME A RESEARCH PAPER ABOUT THE PIECE OR THE COMPOSER.  Also, do not say your emotion was something unimaginative like "happy" or "sad" without providing a detailed explanation of what that emotional experience feels like to you.  Talk a little about your definition of the emotion you have chosen.  You can definitely tie it to a real-world experience or a memory. (Maybe 150 words.)

I don’t expect you to be an expert on music or orchestration, of course.  You can describe the formal elements in regular language like "horns and drums" for instrumentation, "high" or "low" for pitch, and "fast" or "slow" for tempo.  Right now, the Romantic artists would want us to focus on the emotional content and run with that.

Part Three:  Choose a song or piece of music from your own Spotify account or any song you know that makes you FEEL the same way as the Romantic Era piece you described.  Please include the name of the artist/band and the title of the song (and Youtube link, if you’re feeling generous).  Give particular focus to the emotional experience when you listen to it—how is it bringing about the same feeling or emotion as the piece you chose for Part One? DO NOT TELL ME HOW GREAT ARIANA GRANDE IS AND DO NOT TELL ME THE HISTORY OF THE ARTIST OR BAND. Geez.

Then describe in specific, concrete detail the connections you made between the two pieces of music.  It may have nothing to do with they lyrics, or they may be included as a factor, but be sure that you do not only discuss the lyrics. Remember that the composers above wrote works that very often did not have a vocal component.  Discuss the primary sonic element or emotion that ties these works together for you.  It will be better for you to stick to one emotion and develop it rather than provide a big long superficial list.  You might want to consider including an example of a memory, an experience, a person, an event that made you feel that same way. (Maybe 350 words.)

These elements should be developed into a few thorough, coherent paragraphs.  Express your thoughts in depth, even if you think that they are things "everybody knows" already.  This is your position–express it clearly and show evidence of how it holds up with a concrete example.  This assignment will be assessed on its clarity, its degree of engagement with its topic, and the sophistication of thought it expresses.  Your essay must be no less than 500 words (but definitely feel free to go over!).
