A narrative essay is another word for a short story, and for this class you are going to write a short, non-fiction narrative about yourself.
First, your story should be only about one relatively brief incident in your life. Remember, this essay is short (the final draft will only be 4 pages or so), so you shouldnt write about something like The Two Months I Spent in Europe. Choose an incident that took place over the course of one day or less.
Next, make sure your story has a solid beginning, middle, and end. And make sure the story starts with a hook, an opening sentence or two that makes the reader want to read further. And make sure the story ends clearly, so that the reader isnt left hanging or confused.
Finally, see if you can write a story that has a theme. A theme is a message that the author is trying to convey to his or her readers. A simple way to look at it is the moral to the story. When you tell your story, try to write it in such a way that a reader can find some meaning in it.
I really enjoyed reading your strange stories from last week. For the most part, they were well written, and they were all interesting. They also gave me some ideas on which grammar and punctuation issues I will want to discuss later in the semester.
