To help you develop your active and critical reading skills, you will be asked to write four reading responses through the course. These responses should each be one 10-12 sentence paragraph in length and should demonstrate formal academic structure beginning with a topic sentence, include cited, specific evidence and/or examples to support your topic sentences claim, provide analysis discussing the evidence and/or examples and connecting them to the topic sentence, and end with a concluding sentence. This paragraph must address the prompt provided below as its focus. You will be provided a rubric with this assignment sheet detailing how the response will be assessed.

For this response, please read Before the A.D.A., There was Section 504 by Julia Carmel:

In our readings and discussions around active reading, we have discussed the idea of analysis, looking at the form and function of a text in an effort to understand how it works to achieve its purpose for a specific audience. Remember that the four broad purposes Andrew outlined in his Week Two video lecture are: Entertain, Reflect, Inform, and Persuade and/or Convince. For this reading response, you will be asked to examine the form and function of Carmels article to answer the following prompts:

What do you think is the main purpose of Carmels article? In other words, what do you think the function of the article is? How does the form of the text, including its larger organizational structure, the use of details and examples, and its integration of quotes and other evidence support this function?

In answering these questions in your paragraph, be sure to use specific examples from the article to support your answer. If you use exact wording from the article, use quotation marks like this to signal to the reader these are words taken from the text.

Be sure to use the following structure when writing your paragraph:

  1. Topic sentence that answers the question in the prompt in a single sentence.
  2. An example or piece of evidence from the article that supports your topic sentences claim.
  3. Analysis explaining your topic sentence and connecting the example or evidence to your topic sentence. This should be the majority of your paragraphs length.
  4. A concluding sentence that ends the paragraph.

Dont forget your paragraph must be between ten and twelve sentences in length and should be formatted with an MLA heading, double-spaced lines, and the first line of the paragraph should be indented.
