“College” writing, or academic writing is  a genre,  or a style of writing, with a specific set of requirements and commonly agreed upon practices by those who write academic articles (and/or college level essays). The first  essay you will write in this class is a sub-genre of academic writing, the  Personal Narrative Essay.  Being aware of “genre” helps us focus on the goals of different types of writing.

Dirk’s essay offers an introduction to the concept of “genre” as identifying a system or style of writing. She asks us to look at how we encounter genre in our everyday lives.
