NOVA Online: MTH-245 DATA ANALYSIS PROJECT

This project is meant to help you apply concepts learned in this course to the real world. This project will help you understand hoe the informative decision is made using data analysis. After completing this project, you should be able to determine which statistical procedures are appropriate, and use software (StatCrunch) to carry out the procedures and interpret the output. StatCrunch is a statistical software that is available with your ebook on MyLab Statistics.

Use the U.S. Temperatures data file provided as an excel file (Source: National Climatic Data Center). Generate all requested graphs and tables using StatCrunch.

  1. Exploratory Data Analysis (Use the variable “Temperature”)
    1. Summarize the data using a…
      1. stem and leaf diagram.
      2. histogram.
        1. Use a class width of 0.5 degrees Fahrenheit.
        2. Start with a class limit of 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
        3. Use frequencies on the vertical axis.
        4. Show class frequency on top of bars.
      3. box and whiskers plot (do click on “use fences to identify outliers”).
    2. Investigate the data for definite outliers. Drop all definite outliers from the set and redo part (a). Do you see a difference in the results?
    3. Summarize the data set using a table of descriptive statistics. The table must be generated by a statistical software and include the following statistics:
      1. The number of observations in data set
      2. Mean
      3. Median
      4. Mode
      5. Max
      6. Min
      7. Quartiles
      8. Interquartile range
      9. Standard deviation
      10. Variance
      11. Range
      12. Standard error of the mean

  1. Inferential Statistics (Use the variable “Temperature”)
    1. Use a STATISTICAL SOFTWARE to construct a 90% confidence interval for µ, the annual mean U.S. temperature.
    2. A meteorologist expressed that the annual mean U.S temperature exceeds 52.1 degrees Fahrenheit. At the 10% significance level, do the data provide sufficient evidence to support the meteorologist’s? Have Software conduct the appropriate test. Using the software output, perform the full hypothesis test.
    3. Are the results of the confidence interval and hypothesis test the same? Explain why or why not.
  2. Regression Analysis
    1. Identify the response and the explanatory variables.
    2. Construct a scatter plot, and fit a trend line.
    3. Find the line of best fit using a software.
  3. Project Summary & Findings
    1. Write a brief introductory paragraph regarding the background of data. Use complete and coherent sentences to answer the questions.
    2. Write paragraph (or two) that specifies the shape of the distribution of the data and reference your graph(s) used to make your decision.
    3. Discuss the presence or absence of outliers.
    4. Interpret the following values within context for the sample mean, median, and mode. Which measure of center best represents the given data?
    5. State the range of the data and the standard deviation.
    6. State the practical interpretation for the 90% confidence interval.
    7. State the null hypothesis, the test-statistic, and the p-value for the hypothesis test in B).
    8. Clearly state your conclusions of the hypothesis test within context and include the significance level in your statement.
    9. Interpret the slope in context and the correlation (from the results in C).
    10. Predict the annual mean U.S. temperature for the year (i) 2016 and (ii) 2500.
    11. In which prediction of temperature do you have more faith? Why?

  1. Format for submitting Statistics Project
    1. First page: 1. Type your name. 2. Under your name, put MTH245 with your correct section number (e.g. MTH245-xxxx) 3. Type “Data Analysis Project” centered.
    2. Part D)
    3. Division Page for “METHODS”
    4. Part A) – include all software
    5. Part B) – include all software
    6. Part C) – include all software Output
    7. Title and label all of your graphs “correctly”
    8. How has this project helped you understand the purpose and value of the study of statistics? Your response must be in complete sentences.
