Over the past year, we have all experienced a new virus breakout most commonly known as Covid-19. It is believed to have originated in Wuhan, a city in China in December 2019. What we know about this virus is that it is a novel severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS); some symptoms are: fever, cough, fatigue, and sometimes the loss of taste and smell. It spreads from person to person through the respiratory route after an infected person exhales air. There are a few ways it can be prevented, such as social distancing, wearing a face mask, thorough handwashing, surface cleaning, ventilation, and air filtration. While Covid-19 is fairly new, humankind has been in contact with other viruses and bacteria that enter through the respiratory system, which will also be mentioned. We will be concentrating on the use of facemask, its effectiveness, and how to disinfect it. The most common facemasks that are being used are N95, Non-surgical facemask, and Cloth mask. The N95 is a filtering facepiece respirator mask. The 95 is part of its name as it filters out at least 95% of airborne particles. The best way of disinfecting the N95 is by using vaporized hydrogen peroxide (VHP) or ultraviolet (UV) light. If these two types of disinfecting are not accessible, dry heat by 60 min can also work. The non-surgical facemask is fluid-resistant and provides protection to the wearer against large droplets. It also protects the people around you from respiratory emissions. These types of masks in contrast to N95 are disposable and single use masks. Lastly, the cloth mask is most effective when it is made from tightly woven fabrics, such as cotton blends, and need to have at least two to three layers of fabric. These types of mask can be reused after two types of disinfecting: it can be placed under the sun or under fluorescent lighting, and the second form is to wash with detergent and bleach with warm water and then dry it on high heat. During this pandemic it is well known that there was a shortage of the N95 mask, therefore, at second best the non-surgical and cloth mask are effective among the public when practicing social distance. Lastly, there are other viruses and bacteria that can be contracted from person to person via air, which can be prevented using face masks that have been previously mentioned. The most common viruses are: common cold, influenza, SARS (Covid-19), whooping cough, pneumonia, and chickenpox, whereas for bacteria: legionella, mycobacterium (tuberculosis), scarlet fever, and Corynebacterium (Diphtheria). In the midst of this pandemic and with the promise of a vaccine on the horizon it is important to continue to practice social distance, wearing a face mask, and constant handwashing.
