Access the Nutrition Research LibGuide here: The Nutrition Research Libguide was developed to help students in identification of peer-reviewed or scholarly articles using the college’s on-line databases. This is an academic skill that will help you in this class as well as your other college classes. The libguide also explains the difference between primary and secondary source  information.

Access the college’s on-line databases from the library page using this link: Follow the directions  for student log in and then use the key word search to locate a primary source research article on a nutritional topic that interests you. (For example: weight loss, diabetes, ketogenic diets, vitamin supplementation, etc.) Be sure that your chosen article IS a primary source research article!  (Use of secondary source articles does not fulfill the assignment and will result in a significant point deduction.) Secondary source information includes newspapers, magazines, encyclopedias, books, and research reviews. Primary source research articles are written by scientists conducting new experimental research and are published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Read or skim the article and determine key points. Paraphrase the information from the article including some details by using the format suggested below.  Direct quotation from the article should be limited. Excessive use of quotation in your summary will result in a point deduction. Summarize the article in language you would use to explain the article to the general public. Incorporate proper in-text (parenthetical) citation within your narrative summary.Your Works Cited should include, at a minimum, a full-text citation for your chosen primary source research article as well as your textbook. Failure to incorporate in-text, parenthetical citation will result in a significant point deduction.  Submissions that fail to include a Works Cited will result in a "0". Submit your assignment to Canvas by the specified deadline.

After you submit your narrative (including your Works Cited) to the Assignment Box, go to the Canvas Gradebook, and ensure your submission is there. Find the assignment and then click on the colored box next to the assignment points to review your Similarity Score (word matching report) from Turnitin.com via Canvas. Review the report and re-submit with necessary corrections, if need be. Matches to your citation(s) are okay. Matches to your wording are only okay if you properly format a direct quote as seen below in the example.

You will receive Instructor Feedback on your ability to: 1) correctly identify primary source research articles, 2) put information into your own words, 3) correctly format full-text citations, and 4) implement proper citation in your writing. This activity will build your communication skills for our class assignments and beyond.

Here are some examples that may help:

  • Original and correct quoting format: “The incidence of Exercise-Associated Hyponatremia (EAH) continues to spread into a wider variety of sporting activities and cause unnecessary deaths in otherwise healthy individuals.” (Hew-Butler, T.)
  • Paraphrase: Although first reported in ultra-marathon runners in the 1980s , incidence of Exercise-Induced Hyponatermia (EAH) has now been documented in individuals competing in shorter races, team sports, and even yoga classes. (Hew-Butler, T.)
  • Summary: The leading cause of Exercise-Associated Hyponatremia (EAH) is over-consumption of water and sports drinks during and following physical activity. (Hew-Butler, T.)
  • Adding more details: Prevention of of Exercise-Associated Hyponatermia (EAH) requires better communication and education of athletes, coaches, event volunteers,  and medical staff  about the dangers of overzealous fluid consumption. Drinking fluids to quench thirst is sufficient when participating in physical activities. The advice to drink water at every available opportunity when exercising is misguided.  (Hew-Butler, T.)
